Choosing Time-Attendance Software

April 30th, 2009

In a previous post I discussed the importance of investing in time and attendance software. Now I want to touch upon some points to consider when looking for a solution.

Usage. First, figure out what you need in a time and attendance software solution. Are you interested in simply streamlining accounting tasks, or do you also want a solution that will also help you meet federal and state regulation and compliance requirements related to labor and tax payments? What about implementing ways to notify employees of important work and attendance-related issues? There’s several simple solutions to choose from as well as more complex all-in-one software packages. The challenge is determining what solution is best for your company.

At the very least, make sure that employees can easily track hours worked for a single or several projects, that they can make adjustments in time worked and also view pay stubs online whenever necessary. They should be able to communicate with human resources effectively as well.

Flexibility. These days most corporate-wide software applications are Software As A Service (SaaS) solutions, meaning that they are Web-based. This is definitely what you want in a time and attendance solution. That way your employees will be able access the system from just about any location where there is an Internet connection via an Internet browser.

Simplicity. Make certain that the time and attendance software is simple to use and practical. You don’t need headaches in the timekeeping process. If there’s any doubt in your mind that people will have difficulty with operating the software or make mistakes when logging hours worked, turn elsewhere for a solution that meets your expectations.

Cost effectiveness. While evaluating time and attendance software products, find the one that will give you the most bang for your buck. Settle for quality, not bells and whistles that may be appealing but won’t make the timekeeping process any more expedient. Make sure the solution falls within your budget.
