Lean Manufacturing: Less Waste, Better Business
December 12th, 2008
Lean manufacturing is a real revolution in the manufacturing industry.
Lean principles were originated from the Japanese manufacturing industry by Toyota Motor Co. about five decades ago.
Lean production or lean manufacturing is a systematic approach that identifies and eliminates waste. Its gist is offering more value with less work. Lean production is carried out through incessant improvement by pushing product flow on customer demand.
Lean production principles and benefits apply to all processes: customer relation, service, product design, health care, high tech, sales and marketing and fast food. That is why some people call it “lean thinking” instead of “lean manufacturing.”
Lean manufacturing focuses on waste reducing and on improving work smoothness. Its strategies help save millions of dollars and produce excellent results.
Advantages comprise reduced set-up times, lower lead times, lower equipment expense, and increased income. The manufacturer gets a competitive edge by increasing quality and reducing costs. Thus the manufacturer is more responsive to customer demands.
Lean manufacturing is a clue to adding value and improving efficiency while continually struggling against waste.
So to eliminate waste, lean manufacturing tries to provide optimal quality, whereby all the parts of the product are instantly examined after manufacturing. In case any defect is fixed, production is ceased. Specialists try to find a solution to the fixed problems.
Lean manufacturing provides for 20 percent defect reduction, 15-35 percent productivity increase, and 75 percent working capital reductions.
Lean production helps avoid waste. So, it will help eliminate anything that does not add value to the final product.
